The cost of a heat pump

Buying a heat pump is a large and important investment for your home. It is thus important to understand what it is you are paying for and how prices compare between different types of heat pumps but also other types of heating. Generally speaking the price of a heat pump is dependent of the following factors:

  • Type of heat pump
  • Type of water storage
  • Available subsidies
  • Maintenance costs
  • Pre-installation work

The easiest way of knowing how much your heat pump would cost for your home is of course to set up an appointment with one of our heating experts or simple get a preliminary offer.

The difference between Air/Water and Geothermal

Air/Water

Air-to-water heat pumps are relatively easy to install, so the investment costs are correspondingly lower. Depending on the structure, they can be installed both inside and outside the building. The annual energy and maintenance costs are many times lower than with an oil heater, but slightly higher than with a geothermal probe.

Geothermal

For the geothermal probe (brine-water heat pump), a pipe approx. 200m deep is drilled. The investment costs are correspondingly higher. In the medium and long term, an investment compared to oil heating is still worthwhile, as the geothermal probe is highly energy efficient and has much lower maintenance costs.

Subsides and taxes

The final price of your heat pump is going to be significantly lowered by the generous subsidy programs offered in all Swiss cantons as well as in many Gemeindes. In addition you will also benefit from a one time tax write-off. This is how it works.

Subsidies

Depending on in which canton you live, you can get up to a third of the cost covered by subsidy programs. The subsidy rates vary quite a lot though. In Basel-Stadt for example, you can get more than 25'000 CHF in subsidies when investing in a heat pump. On the other hand, canton Bern offers a lower rate of around 6'000 CHF. Still, no matter where you live, the cantonal subsidies will cover a large part of your investment costs. Here you can read more about the benefits in your region.

Taxes

As a general rule, investments in a heat pump can be tax deductible up to 100%, depending on whether it is a renovation or a new building. This will further help lower your investment costs.
